Un autre appel à contribution est ouvert pour le colloque 2014 ECPR, Public and Private: Religious/secular politics in the 21st Century, Glasgow, 3-6 septembre 2014. Date limite de candidature 12 février 2014.
The modern state has supposedly taken control from religious institutions over the regulation of significant aspects of private lives like marriage, sexual behavior, parenting and education. In practice, religion continues to play a significant role in private lives, the division of authority between religious and secular institutions often remains unclear and religious and secular groups struggle over questions of authority. Consequently, in many countries religion remains central to political debates and religious politics remains a contentious issue. Agreements and arrangements between religious and secular established in earlier years face different challenges in the contemporary global world when religious (or traditional) groups demand to restore order and morality, or secular groups demand new freedoms and less religious authority. Questions like the recognition of gay marriage, abortion, polygamy and religious slaughter of animals receive political salience as states contend with conflicting demands of groups unsatisfied with existing rules and groups fighting against change. In many democracies, therefore, previous agreements between are re-negotiated between religious and secular groups. This proposed panel invites papers that engage with different aspects of religion in private lives and the political debates or struggles involved. Specifically, topics like gay marriage, abortion, religious rituals and religious/secular education are welcome.
