Religion, justice, égalité

AAC pour la session SocRel Sociology of Religion and the Road to Equality and Justice du colloque 2022 de BSA, Building equality and justice now, 20-22 avril (en ligne). DLC 29 octobre 2021.

What role can and should sociologists of religion play in the development of equality and justice in society? At the centre of our work lie religious – and non-religious – individuals and institutions who are frequently deeply intertwined with matters of equality and justice. For many, working towards a “better world” is a key tenet of their belief systems, whether through protecting creation from the wrath of climate crisis, speaking on behalf of and walking alongside the oppressed, or providing practically for those left behind by society. Yet accounts of serious systemic injustice, both historic and contemporary, involving religious movements (whether as victims or perpetrators) around the UK and across the world continue to bring pain to those involved. Religious groups also remain implicated in deeply contentious political conversations across the globe, both contributing towards and suffering from deep injustice.

As sociologists of religion, tasked with understanding the nature, experience, and role of religion in the modern world, what is our responsibility when faced with these situations? Is reporting through our academic output enough, or do we have a duty to pro-actively respond through other forms of engagement? What are the ethical responsibilities that come with sociological research, and what role can the sociology of religion legitimately play in building equality and justice?

We encourage papers looking at any area of “equality” and/or “justice” as it relates to our work with religious and non-religious people and groups, both in the UK and around the world. Please submit your abstracts using the BSA website and, when prompted, select “Sociology of Religion” as your preferred stream.
